“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”
Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2)
“Then he explained that the name was the important thing for inspiring the necessary fear. You see, no one would surrender to the dread pirate Westley.”
-The Princess Bride
So here’s my niggling problem: what do I call this blog? Admittedly, I’m using this minor obstacle as a fod to have something to write about but I need to start somewhere so why not with the first thing as I start this public expriment on navel gazing? Still, there is something in having a good name. Something to grab attention and at least spark a little envy in the why-didn’t-I-think-of-it vein.
Currently, my URL is just a translation of my name had I been so lucky to be born native to the most used language. I don’t hate my name, it’s certainly unique although a little hard to say, and worse to be heard butchered,(my name’s in French btw but unless I know you irl, I’d like to keep it private for now) but you have to admit that Jack Fields has a kinda mojo going for it. It sounds like the name of some espionage thriller hero (“Jack Fields stepped out of the shadows and snapped the Nazi sentry’s neck in a devil may care fashion”). But it’s just a temporary name until I find something I like.
I thought of calling it The Kitchen Sink so as to let the reader (if there are any) be cued in that this blog would be about any and all topic that I may have taken an interest to. Then I figured it would just come off as a clever foodie title (but I may write of food once in a while). The obvious is simply my name. It would be easy for my friends and family but blah…for the plainess of it, not friends and family.
Well, I’ll think of something better eventually. In the meanwhile, this has given me something to start this blog and that’s good enough. I think this first attempt was so-so, maybe I used too many clichés and my voice a bit formal but I expect to improve with practice. Now, how to end this…check ya later?…auf wiedersehen?…see ya suckas?…ah, fuck it
